Top Scams

Two of the top scams on the Internet include phishing and the Nigerian scam letter. With phishing, the scam victim is told that there is a problem with their bank account, credit card or tax refund.

The phishing email usually has a link to a scam website that looks like an actual bank or company web site. The scam victim logs in and gives away their username and password in the process. The scam victim is then asked for their bank account number, credit card number or social security number. Once the scammer obtains this information, they can withdraw money from the victims bank accounts and make charges on their credit cards.

The Nigerian scam letter is also referred to as the Africa scam. It is also one of the top scams on the Internet. The scam letter is usually longer than the message sent in the phishing email. Its goal is to convince the scam victim that they can receive a large fortune if they cooperate with the scammer. The check scam usually follows the scam letter and involves the scam victim cashing a check for the scammer. Since the check is fake, the funds are withdrawn from the victims account after the proceeds are sent to the scammer.

It is possible to avoid these top scams on the Internet by recognizing phishing email scams and scam letters.
