The African scams typically consist of a scam letter which, in some cases, can be quite lengthy. The African scam is not exclusive to Africa, however. It can come from any other continent. Since the majority of scam letters seem to come from Nigeria, Ivory Coast or Benin, this type of scam is sometimes referred to as the African scam. The Africa scam begins as a scam letter but usually ends up as a check scam. The African scam might also be referred to as the Nigerian scam since many of the scam letters originate from Nigeria. Other African countries that might be mentioned in the scam letter include Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Benin, Cote dIvoire or Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Sudan and South Africa as well as Nigeria itself. The African scam involves telling the potential victim that they can receive a large amount of money by posing as a relative or next of kin of a person who died and left a large amount of money in an account. In order to release the money, expenses must be paid. This is done by the scam victim cashing a check and sending the proceeds back to the scammer.
